When McCain announced halting his campaign, my first thought was that he must need a break for health reasons. Then I saw him on TV and saw his left eye. Perhaps he has had a stroke? If he has, then he must pull out of the race for the benefit of himself and USA.
The problem then becomes Sarah Palin. She is without doubt entirely out of her depth in this economic meltdown. McCain picked the wrong person for the wrong reasons.
If McCain does step aside before the election, then I guess the Republicans select a new candidate, probably Mitt Romney with a sensible VP. But it would just be a gesture because they’d lose the election.

Joe and Rob both mentioned this to me in the past week, and now several readers have brought it up. I also just noticed that Atrios picked up on this too today. Something wrong, changed, droopy or puffy with McCain’s left eye. Anybody else notice anything? I just searched Google a bit more and found references to his eye being droopy in April and May of this year as well. But whatever it is, it seems to be intermittent. (McCain has had 4 bouts of melanoma, and did in 2002 have a benign growth removed from under his left eye.)
I decided to take a look at McCain’s Herbert Hoover Speech, as Rob calls the economic speech McCain gave last Friday in Wisconsin, and tried to see what it was that Rob was noticing wrong with McCain’s left eye. It was only a 15 second video, so I pulled it up in my iMovie movie editor and checked out each frame (see a selection of still shots above). What you see is apparently McCain’s left eye more closed than this right, and/or when he blinks, his left eye is lazier, or blinks slightly out of phase with his right. Either way, it does look like something’s up. Perhaps McCain has always had a bad left eye, though it’s odd that so many people just noticed this week.
Actually, there’s one more thing. A reader wrote me about a week ago, commenting on how suddenly McCain’s make up had changed. As though the campaign was suddenly trying to hide something. I read the email, kind of shrugged, and went on my way. Well, today that reader wrote back and noted the story that came out earlier today about McCain’s apparently new $5000 make-up artist. Isn’t that interesting – suddenly when everyone is noticing something wrong, something changed, with McCain’s face, he hires a $5000 make-up artist, and she now seems to be attached at his hip.

Urgent! McCain has just confirmed health problems. But he did not specify whether or not to continue the fight for the presidency.

Goofy left eye or not, I can’t understand this gamble….why didn’t McCain get back on the POW horse and ride it through the election. Maybe let his 527s do some racist ads…

Why are people just now wondering about John McCain’s health…..he’s 72 and has multiple episodes of skin cancer! check the Brave New Films on youtube and it’s pretty disturbing. If he’s this bad under the stress of the campaign….how is he going to be actually running the country??? Does anybody want Palin running the country?

I have noticed that his eyes have lost much of their color as well. That happened to my mother’s eyes in the last few months of her life. She however, was 85. Tina Turner is about 70 but she looks amazing…John McCain looks like a much older man.

Much more likely a Bell’s Palsy. A temporary paralysis of one side of his face. Notice that his forehead doesn’t seem to wrinkle in a normal way on the left side. This nails the diagnosis. This is very likely temporary and is not a stroke, but he will have a temporary paralysis of his face. Look for his left eye to tear and look red if not patched (no normal blinking). His speech may sound off because the left side of his mouth won’t work properly. He may drool from the left side of his mouth and be unaware of it.

I’ve noticed both the eye and the makeup. For a few days there, his face was looking like melted wax. I think he’s just worn out. Campaigning for President is hard on young and healthy men, and he is neither.
