The World’s Shortest Fairy Tale

June 30, 2007

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl, “Will you marry me?” The girl said “No.” And she lived happily ever after and went shopping, drank martinis with friends, always had a clean house, never had to cook, had a closet full of shoes and handbags, stayed skinny, and was never farted on.

Roller Coaster

June 12, 2007

A dozen riders on a roller-coaster were left hanging upside down – 46 metres above the ground – after a power outage shut down the ride.

It took about 30 minutes for firefighters to rescue the riders using a ladder truck, said Aundrea Crary, spokeswoman for the Magic Springs & Crystal Falls amusement park in Arkansas.

New Zealand

June 11, 2007

I’m back in the Land of the Long White Cloud and happy to be here. Still a bit jetlagged from the trip, but adjusting quickly.

Does anyone know the postal address for Helmut Koch? Is European Purusha still in Oebisfelde, Germany? Please let me know if you know. :-)

Panama City

June 2, 2007

My plans have changed at the last minute and I am no longer going to Panama. When departure day came, I had a bad cold/flu and was unable to travel.

Last weekend there was a big conference here for the famous film maker David Lynch. I was selling books and dealing with a lot of people. I must have picked it up then because two days later it hit me. During the week I was busy packing my bags, finishing up at work and saying goodbyes so I was exhausted. I thought I was getting better and ok to travel, but the night before I was due to leave and I could relax for a bit it all came back and thumped me. In the morning I realised that I was not in a state to carry heavy bags to Central America and spend ten days travelling across the world. So I stayed in bed.

I have travel insurance, but they need a doctor’s certificate verifying my illness. I rang some local doctors and was told that they were booked up or didn’t accept new patients. I was told to go to the emergency room in the hospital. The emergency room charges US$300.00 to walk in the door! I’m serious, just to see a doctor will cost at least $300.00. If you go after 6pm then it is on US$151.00. A regular family doctor here charges US$75.00. However, I will be seeing a new doctor in town on Monday for $35.00. Hopefully, I’ll still be sick then and he’ll give me the certificate!

Healthcare in America is fine if you’re rich, but for the average Joe it is very, very expensive. USD75.00 to see a GP in rural Iowa!! How much is it in the city? Apparently, the biggest driver behind increased healthcare costs is litigation.

So on Tuesday I’ll get on the bus to Chicago, stay the night, fly to LA, stay the night, fly to NZ and arrive at 6:30am on Saturday. See you all soon!
